"I felt secure with the perception that Fåglar I Bur released the best I Dischi disc this year, but then this Monokultur 7″ dropped and things are no longer so clear. This new duo (apparently two people from the garage-punk group Skiftande Enheter) really slam it home with these four tracks, bizarre basement-wave with the freewheeling spirit of early Rough Trade and Mute. Like some of the early greats associated with those labels (Cabaret Voltaire, The Normal, Metal Urbain), Monokultur utilize their humble instrumentation to fantastic effect, not just muddling things up with noise but crafting simplistic and memorable tunes from the muck, all with a vocalist who sounds like Graham Lambkin trying to learn French on Duolingo. It’s a beautiful thing when this works (and sometimes beautiful even when it doesn’t), and a track like the opener “Lindholmen – Stenpiren” is a case in point: anti-rhythmic tape loop, Sightings-style bass clusters, jeering guitar and muttered vocal all work as one in glorious rejection of the mainstream. Masterful!"

IDDB boss mathias andersson:

"One of my most cheered moments this year was sitting drunk on my living room floor when someone put on an unmixed version of 'Lindholmen - Stenpiren' out of nowhere. Right there and then the most jaw-dropping amalgamation of the first bunch of Rough Trade 7"s, Berlin Super 80 and Gothenburg 2018. Monokultur is a new duo that consists of Elin and Julius from Skiftande Enheter and it certainly doesn't stop with 'Lindholmen - Stenpiren' that just happens to kick things off on this 4-track 7". A beautiful and life-elevating blur that brings selected chunks of the first Cabaret Voltaire EP to mind at times with some Gothenburg harbor messing with Cold Storage-like ambience, before jumping headfirst into ham-fisted Death Disco dub territories while pouring warm beer in the Dome 2 sleeve. Back and forth, it's all happening.

200 copies pressed as usual, black vinyl and stamped white labels, postcard attached to the cover and insert. 45rpm. "

Low company:
"Yet more, ESSENTIAL, white hot barroom brawling DIY muck on IDDB. This self-titled four-tracker from from Monokultur, another shadowy outfit from the seemingly bottomless Gothenburg underground (although we gather JJ Ulius, who's amazing solo 7" of spangled jangle we bigged up last week, is at least partly responsible) is a sparse dubbed out minimal synth war cry that - switching between male and female vocalists (by the sounds of it) - combines some of the depraved vocal psychosis of Brainbombs with the caustic steel string corrosion of Mike Cooper's Tropical Gothic. Particular highlight here is ‘Äckel’ (‘Creep’), which in its glacial momentum delivers the inescapable and crushing nirvana that we've come to expect as standard from these shit-stained Dischi diamonds. If you missed out on the Fåglar I Bur 7” from a few weeks ago DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS."
